The Centre for Gender and Communication Research (CGCR) at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), in collaboration with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) UniMAC’s Women’s Executive, hosted a breakfast meeting for female faculty members in February 2026.
The Breakfast Meeting held under the theme, “Working Together; Rising Together,” brought women in academia at UniMAC around the table to share experiences, build networks, and foster stronger collaboration.

The CGCR Director, Dr. Rosemary Obeng – Hinneh, officially introduced the programme and welcomed participants, highlighting the purpose of the gathering as a platform for idea-sharing, mentorship, and collective growth among female faculty.

Dr. Obaapanin Oforiwaa Adu, the Acting Registrar of UniMAC, also addressed the gathering, speaking briefly about her professional journey and experiences in leadership. She reflected on the challenges she encountered along the way and the lessons that shaped her growth. Her remarks underscored the importance of resilience, determination, and continuous self-development in navigating academic and administrative roles.

The Rector of UniMAC’s Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ), Prof. Christina Hammond who was the Guest Speaker, delivered an inspiring message to participants. Encouraging confidence and self-recognition, she remarked that, “take pictures of your every little achievement and heights attained, you are a celebrity,” drawing smiles across the room. She further emphasised that women are to be supported, and urged participants to uplift one another, noting that, “if we help one another, we are rallying support.”
Prof. Hammond described leadership positions as important milestones that come with networking opportunities and platforms for impact. She encouraged participants to celebrate their achievements while also embracing feedback as a necessary tool for growth and improvement.

Participants shared inspiring experiences and the room was filled with camaraderie. In particular, Ms. Beatrice Offeibea Awuku, a Lecturer at UniMAC’s Institute of Languages added a personal dimension to the discussions. She shared her experience pursuing her master’s degree. She spoke candidly about the challenges she faced and how perseverance and support helped her overcome them, inspiring many gathered in the room.

The programme concluded on a high note, after which breakfast was served. The informal session provided an opportunity for participants to interact, strengthen professional relationships, and continue conversations sparked during the meeting.
The event reinforced the importance of unity, mentorship, and mutual support among women in academia, truly reflecting the theme: working together and rising together.

The CGCR at UniMAC was set up to drive evidence-based decision-making on gender issues through research, policy development, and communication strategy. The Centre acknowledges that the correlation between gender and communication lies in the fact that both are socio-culturally determined, and how it is communicated, has much to do with gendered identities. The Breakfast Meeting was one avenue to get women communicating among themselves and share experiences for their growth and support.
