Director of Public Affairs

Nana Efua is an accomplished Marketing and Communications Professional with a passion for communication and branding. She is the Director of Public Affairs at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), the first public university in Ghana established by an Act of Parliament (Act 1059), which merged three specialised institutions comprising the erstwhile Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).

As the Director of Public Affairs, Nana Efua is leading strategy to develop the UniMAC brand name, create visibility for the brand (traditionally and digitally), and build meaningful relationships with stakeholders across the board.

Prior to joining UniMAC, Nana Efua was the Head of Communications & Public Relations at the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana. At IEPA, she built the IEPA brand and promoted educational research in the areas of educational planning, leadership, and administration. Her work at IEPA also pronounced Ghana’s contributions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 as well as global citizenship education in Ghana and the West African sub-region.

For almost ten years before joining the education sector, Nana Efua was in the insurance industry with the indigenous Ghanaian insurance company, GLICO. She was in charge of brand building, communications (traditional and digital), and corporate reputation management of all the six companies of GLICO Group Ltd, with a combined nationwide branch network of over thirty-five (35) branches. The last role she held at GLICO was that of the Group Head, Corporate Affairs & Marketing, where she played a crucial role in maintaining the company’s brand reputation as one of the top five insurance groups in Ghana.

Before that, Nana Efua was the Business Manager and Sales & Marketing Manager at Allure Ghana Ltd, the Fund Raising and Communication Advisor at SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, a Sales and Marketing Officer at SIC Insurance Company Ltd and a Store Assistant at Boots the Chemist, United Kingdom, respectively.

Nana Efua holds a Master of Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Leicester-United Kingdom (UK), a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Cape Coast-Ghana, and a Diploma in Public Relations and Advertising from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (now UniMAC -IJ). She has also obtained a professional Diploma in Insurance from the Ghana Insurance College, a Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from Chartered Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom (CIM-UK) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing from the African Institute of Technology & Entrepreneurship (AITE)/ Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana (CIMG), where she was adjudged the overall best student in Digital Marketing.

Nana Efua has also participated in several courses and workshops such as, Corporate Governance, Brands Management, Setting Standards in Corporate Social Responsibility Practice in Ghana, Event Management, Leadership Workshop, Implementing Science in Education Workshop, among others.

She has also attended local and international conferences such as, the African Insurance Organisation Conference in South Africa (2019), Global Citizenship Education Implementation in Ghana Workshop (2021), Transforming Education Summit in the USA (2022), Transforming Higher Education in the Age of AI Summit in China (2023).

Nana Efua is an accredited member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG), the Chartered Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom (CIM-UK) and the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana. She is also an affiliate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG).

Nana Efua has made significant contributions to Ghana in the field of Marketing, Public Relations, Communications and Education. She has served as a member on various committees where her professionalism in Marketing and Communication has contributed to the successful implementation of projects at institutional, national and international levels. Some of these committees are the Transforming Education Summit (TES) Committee which supported the Ministry of Education (MoE) of Ghana in 2023, to work to accelerate progress towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 and forge a common vision for education at the UN General Assembly; the Innovative Pedagogy Project (IPP) Committee, an initiative of the Education Commission ( now Learning Generation Initiative) that sought to make education inclusive, engaging, and adaptive at the primary level of schooling; the Global Citizenship Committee of IEPA that worked with the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Ghana, to equip learners with the requisite knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to become active citizens by contributing positively to a more peaceful, just and sustainable society and the IEPA -UCC – International Centre For Higher Education Innovation (ICHE1) Committee working to facilitate the smooth functioning of micro-certification programme for teachers to promote competency-based learning.

Other committees Nana Efua has supported during her career in the insurance industry are the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) committees of: “the Drivetime with Insurers”; “Public Relations Committee”; “40th AIO Conference Committee”; “Life Conference Committee”; among others.

In giving back to her professional associations, Nana Efua has also previously work with the Institute of Public Relations Ghana (IPR) as a member of Public Relations & Public Issues Committee and the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana’s (CIMG) Curriculum Development Committee, among others. Currently, she is an adjunct lecturer at the Ghana School of Marketing (GSM) and an Examiner of one of the professional marketing programmes at the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana (CIMG).

As a beauty queen, Nana Efua has always advocated on every platform she finds herself the idea of “beauty with brains” and the fact that the education of a woman is essential for nation building.

Her Research interests are in the areas of women empowerment, girl-child education, reputation management and brand communications. Her mantra is “there’s got to be a better way of doing things”.

When not working, Nana Efua loves to write poetry and she published an anthology in 2018 entitled; “Tebi’s Book of Love Poems”. She is currently working on publishing her second poetry collection.
