The University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) achieved remarkable victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary Debate Competition, held at the Parliament House of Ghana, on Monday March 9, 2026. The win marks a major milestone for the only public university in Ghana specialized in media, arts, and communication.
The high-profile competition featured six leading public universities, including University of Ghana, Legon; Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi; University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale; Central University, Accra; University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Wa; and UniMAC, Accra.
The motion for debate challenged participants to examine, “Ghana’s Reputation as a Beacon of Democracy in the Commonwealth Truly Translates into Real Economic Opportunities for its University Graduates.”

At the forefront of UniMAC’s winning performance were Titus Owusu Darko, a level 400 Journalism student, who boldly delivered the principal speech opposing the motion, and Precious Akos Agrobesa, a level 400 Development Communication student, who reinforced every argument with precise evidence and persuasive insights. Together, they commanded the floor with confidence, sharp reasoning, and seamless teamwork, keeping both judges and audience captivated throughout the intense rounds of debate.
After three rounds of intense deliberation, UniMAC’s team stood out for their meticulously researched arguments, persuasive delivery and confidence. Their poise, clarity, and ability to engage both judges and audience earned them the top prize, cementing their position as the competition’s overall winners.
In recognition of their stellar performance, UniMAC received a cash prize of ten thousand Ghana cedis (GHC10,000), a commemorative plaque, and medals of excellence.

The Judges lauded all participating universities for their depth of research, critical reasoning, and confidence on the parliamentary floor. They urged students to continue engaging in debates and academic discourses that foster critical thinking, public speaking, and contributions to national development.

The Commonwealth Day Debate is part of a series of events organized by the Parliament House to expose students to parliamentary procedures, legislative debate, and democratic governance. The competition offers young scholars a unique platform to deliberate on pressing national issues in an authentic parliamentary setting.
UniMAC’s triumph underscores the university’s dedication to nurturing professional skills, equipping students to think critically, communicate persuasively, and influence societal transformation. The victory not only elevates the university’s profile but also reinforces its mission of producing confident, articulate, and socially conscious graduates ready to engage with national and global challenges. UniMAC is committed to academic excellence and the training of confident and effective communicators for societal transformation.
