UniMAC’s Triumph at The Commonwealth Day Debate Competition Reinforces Academic Excellence Within Ghana and Beyond

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, has described the University’s victory in the 2026 Commonwealth Day Debate Competition, as a clear demonstration of UniMAC’s national dominance in media and communication education in Ghana.

“This achievement signifies UniMAC’s growing dominance at the national level. It reflects the strength of our training, the quality of our students, and our commitment to producing graduates who can excel in competitive intellectual spaces,” he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor made these remarks when the SRC and the student debate team presented to him and the Executive Management, the trophy won at the prestigious competition organised by the Parliament of Ghana. Executive Management members present at the meeting were: the Pro Vice-Chancellor – Prof. Winston Abroampa; the Rectors of UniMAC Constituent Institutes: Prof. Christiana Hammond (UniMAC-IJ), Prof. Samuel Yirenkyi (UniMAC -IFT) and Prof. Cecilia Addei (UniMAC -IL); the Acting Registrar – Dr. Obaapanin Oforiwaa Adu and the Acting Director of Finance – Mr. Mathias Dugu.

According to Professor Opoku Mensah, the triumph not only highlights the intellectual strength of UniMAC students but also reinforces the University’s leadership role in shaping public discourse and academic excellence within the country and beyond.

At the brief ceremony to present the trophy to management, the Dean of Students, Dr. Isaac Tandoh, introduced the delegation comprising the SRC President-Moses Desire Kuoyo, SRC External Affairs Officer – Alex Kobina Stonne, and the winning debaters, Titus Owusu Darko and Precious Akos Agrobesa.

 

Providing details of the competition, Alex Kobina Stonne explained that the contest demanded rigorous research, critical analysis, and persuasive communication. He noted that the UniMAC team distinguished itself at every stage of the competition, ultimately emerging as overall winners.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the students for their performance, describing it as a reflection of the University’s commitment to bridging theory and practice.

Professor Opoku Mensah further emphasised that institutions of higher learning must be measured not only by academic instruction but also by their ability to produce graduates who can apply knowledge effectively in real-world contexts.  “This is not just a win for you, it is a win for UniMAC and a testament to the power of education that transcends the classroom,” he added.

In a notable development, the student team announced that it has dedicated its cash prize from the competition to support an SRC initiative to procure a new bus for the University. The gesture has attracted praise as an example of student leadership and institutional commitment.

“This decision reflects our appreciation to the University and our desire to contribute to its development,” Alex Kobina Stonne stated, expressing hope that the initiative would attract wider stakeholder support.

The ceremony concluded with the formal presentation of the trophy to management by the SRC President on behalf of the student body, symbolising a shared institutional achievement.
