Communication for Development
and Social Change

Course Description:
This course will provide participants the opportunity to explore the role of communication models, approaches, strategies, and media in development contexts, and the strategic uses of communication to promote social change. It examines how communication can be employed for promoting development and social change across different sectors of society. The course involves case studies, class presentations, group presentations and discussions aimed at preparing participants to design and present a communication strategy for improving society.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Explain the historical and contemporary roles of communication in development and for social change (CDSC).
  2. Use of communication models, strategies and techniques to address contemporary social, political, economic and environmental issues.
  3. Apply media (including traditional, conventional, and new media) to undertake campaigns to foster sustainable social, economic and environmental change.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to design and evaluate a CDSC strategy/campaign.
