The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), through its Centre for Global Education and Collaboration (CGEC) has celebrated the UniMAC International Day 2026, under the theme, “Unity in Diversity: Bridging Cultures, Building Futures.” This year’s event was in partnership with the International Students Committee (ISC) and the Students Representative Council (SRC) of UniMAC.
The event, held at the University Auditorium and Forecourt on Friday, 17 July 2026, brought together students, faculty, staff, international students, members of the diplomatic community, government representatives, development partners and invited guests to celebrate the rich cultural diversity.
The programme commenced with a documentary screening highlighting the activities and achievements of the Centre for Global Education and Collaboration since its inception.
A colourful cultural parade by students dressed in traditional attire from different countries set the tone for the celebration, showcasing the beauty, uniqueness and richness of diverse cultures represented at the university.
The event featured cultural performances, exhibitions, traditional music, dance, fashion displays and cuisines from different countries, creating an atmosphere of unity, inclusion and mutual respect while promoting intercultural understanding and global citizenship.
Delivering her address, the Director of the Centre for Global Education and Collaboration, Dr. Lawrencia Agyepong, described the International Day as one of the university’s most significant celebrations, noting that it serves as a platform to promote unity, cultural appreciation and international collaboration.
She indicated that the celebration was not only about showcasing cultures but also about recognising the contributions of international students, global partners and students who had participated in international exchange programmes. “This is a very important day that we celebrate unity in diversity. We are celebrating our international students with us here at UniMAC. We are also celebrating our international partners, and we are celebrating also the students that have gone out on international projects and have come back. It is a unique opportunity for us to showcase to the whole of Ghana and to the rest of the world what International Day means to us at UniMAC,” she said.
Dr. Agyepong expressed appreciation to the university’s international partners, particularly the various embassies that supported the programme by providing cultural costumes, performers and other forms of assistance that contributed to the success of the event. She also thanked the Constituent Institutes under UniMAC for their participation and acknowledged MTN Ghana for its sponsorship and support.
The celebration also featured remarks from representatives of the diplomatic community. Her Excellency Dr. Mrs. Natalia Muzhennikova, Counsellor of the Russian Federation to Ghana, commended UniMAC for organising an event that promotes cultural understanding, strengthens international friendship and deepens educational cooperation among nations. She encouraged students to embrace diversity as a valuable tool for building peaceful and productive societies.
Also addressing the gathering was Professor Liu Baijun, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana, who underscored the importance of cultural exchange and international partnerships in higher education. He encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities to learn from different cultures, describing intercultural engagement as an essential component of academic and personal development in today’s interconnected world.
Representing the Ministry of Education, the Technical Advisor for the Pre-Tertiary and Tertiary Education Directorate, Mr. Stephen Owusu, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to promoting internationalisation within Ghana’s education sector. Mr. Owusu noted that initiatives such as International Day equip students with the global competencies, cultural awareness and collaborative skills needed to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
Representatives from various diplomatic missions also participated in the Embassy Day presentations, sharing insights into their respective countries, cultures and educational opportunities while encouraging stronger academic and cultural partnerships with Ghana.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of awards and certificates to students who participated in the Fraser Valley Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Programme 2025, recognising their successful participation in international collaborative learning.
The celebration concluded with additional cultural performances, official photo session and an exhibition at the university forecourt, where guests interacted with students and sampled traditional foods, cultural artefacts and exhibitions from various countries.
The International Day 2026 celebration reaffirmed UniMAC’s commitment to promoting global education, cultural exchange and international collaboration. It also highlighted the university’s dedication to preparing students to become responsible global citizens who appreciate diversity, embrace inclusion and contribute meaningfully to national and international development.
