UniMAC–IFT Builds Capacity of Ghana’s Parliamentary Broadcasting Staff

On Tuesday, 14th October 2025, the Institute of Film and Television (IFT) at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), officially commenced a five-day intensive training programme for staff of the Parliamentary Broadcasting Department.

This initiative is designed to enhance technical and creative competencies in key areas including:  Documentary Storytelling; Photo & Digital Archiving; Photography; On-Camera Presentation and Audio-Visual Editing.

In a brief opening ceremony, Dr. Ramatu Dadzie, the Dean of the Faculty of Cinematic and TV Arts, in her welcome remarks, expressed delight at the collaboration, emphasising the Institute’s commitment to delivering immersive and impactful learning experiences. “They’ve made the right choice coming to IFT. The knowledge they’ll gain over the next five days will be transformative,” she noted.

Madam Hilda Asante-Agyepong, the Director of the Parliamentary Broadcasting Department, shared her expectations for the training as: “As Ghana’s first film and television school, our expectations are high. We’re here to learn, grow, and return with the skills to elevate our work at Parliament.”

The Coordinator of Short Courses at UniMAC, Dr. Martin Ntem, shared felicitations with the participants and encouraged them to fully engage with the training and facilitators. He noted that, “short courses are ideal for matured workers who need to catch up with the current trends of their professions.”

The workshop is facilitated by a team of seasoned professionals and scholars at UniMAC-IFT including, Dr. Rebecca Hesse, Dr. Mary Ayim-Segbefia, Mr. Yao Ladzekpo, Mr. Joshua Otabil and Ms. Naa Arduah Arday.

Participants expressed enthusiasm for the programme, with many eager to gain hands-on production skills and bridge gaps in media experience. One participant remarked that, “IFT doesn’t just give you what you want—it gives you what you need to excel.

The opening ceremony brought together senior management of UniMAC–IFT, faculty members, and representatives from Parliament’s Broadcasting Department.  Other members of Management and staff present include; Ms. Jennifer Akude, Institute Registrar; Ms. Marian Mantey, Head of Media Unit at UniMAC and PRO of UniMAC-IFT; Mr. Eugene Odame, Head of Film Business and Studies and Ms. Benedicta Lartey, Senior Assistant Registrar.

This training forms part of UniMAC’s broader mission to support media reform and professional development across Ghana’s public institutions. UniMAC-IFT is a Constituent Institute of UniMAC specialised in the broad area of media, broadcast journalism, cinematic and Television arts, Photography, among others.
