UniMAC Strengthens Relationship with the Osu Traditional Council

On July 2, 2025, a delegation from the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), led by the Rector of UniMAC’s Institute of Film and Television (UniMAC-IFT), Professor Samuel Yirenkyi, paid a courtesy visit to the Osu Mantse, Noste Prof. Nii Nortey Owuo IV, at the Osu Palace, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of UniMAC, Professor Eric Opoku-Mensah.

The visit was to pay homage to the traditional ruler and to strengthen relationships between UniMAC and the Osu Traditional Council, as the erstwhile Ghana Institute of Journalism has transitioned to be part of the UniMAC. Prof. Yirenkyi conveyed felicitations from the Management of the University and explained the purpose of the visit in relationship to the transformation that has led to UniMAC.

The delegation from UniMAC, in addition to Prof. Yirenkyi, was made up of Dr. Ramatu Dadzie, Dean of Studies at UniMAC -IFT, Ms. Marian Mantey, Public Relations Officer at UniMAC -IFT, and Ms. Winnifred Gbemuotor from the UniMAC Public Relations Directorate.

The Osu Mantse and his team received the delegation from UniMAC according to tradition and the two parties explored opportunities for collaborations in the areas of:  Cultural documentation in respect to preserving and promoting Ghanaian heritage through storytelling and archival research; language revitalization in developing programs to promote local languages and linguistic diversity in Ghana and youth empowerment; working together on initiatives to engage and support young people in the Osu community.

The Osu Mantse was particularly enthusiastic about a potential joint initiative involving UniMAC’s Institute of Film and Television (IFT), Institute of Journalism (IJ), and Institute of Languages (IL), where culturally relevant stories in local languages are translated by IL with IFT providing visual storytelling, and IJ handling dissemination through media platforms – a perfect blend of media, arts and communication.

The Osu Mantse further pledged his support for UniMAC’s initiatives and indicated his willingness to support UniMAC become great.

The visit underscored UniMAC’s commitment to local engagement and culturally relevant education. Prof. Yirenkyi conveyed UniMAC’s eagerness in collaborating with the Osu Traditional Council to work together to promote cultural heritage, support youth development, and foster community growth.

The warm reception and productive dialogue demonstrated the strong potential for an impactful partnership between UniMAC and the Osu Traditional Council. UniMAC is enthusiastic about the possibilities and opportunities that this collaboration will bring.
